If you’ve ever wanted a bit more game in your theatre, ByoLogyc: Retreat is a show that should appeal to you. Running November 2 & 3 at the Evergreen Brick Works, it tells the story of a major pandemic, and the safe camp set up to protect citizens of Toronto from it—by the biotech company that created it. Participants in this end-of-the-world simulation will be expected to explore, solve problems, and possibly defend themselves from a deadly invasion. Participants also get to choose what kind of experience they have, based on the ticket they buy. Be an average citizen on the Adventure Ticket; a paramilitary squad recruit on the Power Ticket; a resistance fighter on the Action Ticket; or relax in luxury as a board member on the Privilege Ticket.

Subscribers to this mailing list also get a special discount: use the coupon code RECESSTO for $10 off each ticket. More details and tickets are at www.zed.to/tickets.

THE WIRE: THE GAME
by Fuzzy Dunlop

Multiple games intersect in what is probably not a nuanced commentary on the modern urban crime environment. The Barksdale Organization competes with The Stanfield Organization to move the most product, while the Western District competes with the Eastern District to get the best stats. Meanwhile, Omar does whatever he wants. Plus, everybody has their own private goals anyway, so your team will probably end up losing. Activities include running, sneaking, playing with guns, and getting really drunk afterwards.

Recess is getting serious at Toronto’s premiere gaming festival, Gamercamp! We’re running not one, but two events. Gamercamp is a massive, lovely event that makes the joy flow fast and hard; we’re thrilled to be invited!

Friday is make-day!

Create a game with us at Friday’s MakerU! You don’t need to draw, you don’t need to code, you don’t even need to have a good idea. Our patent-pending MetaGamification Process® makes being creative fun, simple, and mostly non-dangerous.

Sunday is play-day!

Join us for the usual antics on Sunday. For Gamercamp, we’re busting out the big guns: Visible Cities comes to you all the way from London (the cool one.) Players race through the same area of town, repeatedly, across different dimensions. Each alternate universe presents unique hazards, in the form of chasers who will hunt players and attempt to stop them from completing their mission. Only the speedy, the stealthy, and the smart will adapt and survive. This is gonna be huge!

But there is a catch!

You need to buy tickets to Gamercamp. But this is like saying that eating a cake is the catch for eating icing. Gamercamp might even have actual cake, for all I know. It hasn’t been announced, but I wouldn’t be surprised.

7PM, Duke of York (map)

As the weather gets nippy, we’re packing up the water guns, putting away the sweatbands, and heading for the sweet embrace of crowded tables, full pints, and indoor heating. This month, we’ve got 3 games created during September’s Game Prototype Challenge. Designers were asked to make games that could be played in a bar; so that’s what we’re gonna do!

The Brews and the Bees

by David Fono

A strategic drinking game for 2 players and a number of boozing spectators. Two florists compete to attract bees to their flowers. The bees compete to get sauced.

Gardeners

by Jason P. Kaplan

An abstract board game for 2 players. Easy to learn, fast to play!

Hedge Duel

by Damian Sommer

A deep, strategic card game for 2 players. Pollen, seasons, hedges, auctions; it’s got it all!

Recess.to is teaming up with the Game Prototype Challenge is to make some magic happen. GPC is a monthly event that challenges game designers to create a game in one week, based on changing themes; it’s kind of like videogame Iron Chef. For the September GPC, we’re encouraging game designers (both actual and imagined) to make games for recess.to — games that are played physically, in real spaces, and designed accordingly. Specifically, with the good weather waning, we’re looking for games that can be played in a bar. Some examples:

A parlour / party game, like Werewolf / Mafia, or Capetown, or G.K. Chesterson’s Conversation Piece.

A strategic drinking game, like Tablero de Yinzer.

A good ol’ fashioned board game!

These games are easy to make, in a sense, because you don’t need to program, or do art, or anything (although you could.) This is game design at its core. Hard core game design.

If you make a game, we’ll play it at a recess.to event sometime in early October! All you’ve got to do is write up your rules and whatever else needs to go with the game, and post them online. If the game requires resources, we’ll help you acquire them. Then, submit to GPC by emailing contact@gameprototypechallenge.com.

The Challenge is on as of right now, and the deadline for completed games is Monday, September 19. But you don’t need all that time, because you’re, like, some sort of wizard. Get cracking!
